A Santo Domingo staple, a stop on an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, and a 24-hour greasy dive destination, Barra Payan serves up sandwiches and shakes. That’s it. It’s a simple menu. No sides. Two things that are just really, really good. The shakes are made with fresh fruit that fills the counter tops, the sandwiches are simple — filled with cheese and add-ons like pulled pork, ham, mustard, mayo, tomatoes and more cheese. Lots and lots of cheese. The round-the-clock corner spot has people lined up day and night — and for good reason.
Batida de Zapote (fresh fruit with milk)
The bread is crispy and airy and the cheese is on par with some of the best Wisconsin brick.
