Just a short drive from the capital city of Santo Domingo, Mercado Modelo offers up just about any vegetable, fruit, spice, flower, street meat, herb, seed, dried fish, amber (don’t trust the amber), larimar (you’re good), doodad, trinket, doohickey, object, stuff and thing a market in the DR could offer. It’s huge. Some of the traditional ingredients lend themselves to the home cook — citrus herbs and fruits, obnoxiously large cinnamon sticks and raw sugar cane that look like something out of Creature From the Black Lagoon. A great place to spend a Saturday morning, buy some local fair and bring home a souvenir.
